I look forward to this day

Each spring the Spokane County Conservation District hosts a native tree and shrub seedling sale for conservation purposes such as wildlife habitat, windbreaks, hedgerows, reforestation and stream enhancement. They can also be used for home and garden projects. The trees and shrubs only cost a few dollars each, and provide an inexpensive way to add trees to your property. This year I ordered 25 Douglas Fir trees, 10 Blue Spruce trees, and 5 White Pine trees. With the help of my family we planted everything in a couple of hours. The adjacent picture is one of the Blue Spruce trees we planted today. Since I don’t water any of the trees throughout the year, I add some mulch around the trees to help them retain the moisture in the soil.

It is work, but I look forward to the yearly planting ritual. The reward is worth the effort. I add a few trees each year and before you know it, I have a forest. I planted the trees below about 15 years ago from seedlings purchased at the sale and look what I get to enjoy now. There is Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir, and Blue Spruce in the picture.
