Weeds
The Spokane County Noxious Weed List features good pictures of most noxious weeds in our area. To learn what herbicides work best on each type of weed, check out the Spokane County Herbicide Recommendations page.
I have found WeedMaster® to work on all weeds I have encountered in this area. WeedMaster® is a herbicide that contains 2,4-D and dicamba which kills weeds and not grasses. I purchase the herbicide at North 40. When I first moved to my home, my property was covered with weeds. It took a number of herbicide applications the first few years to get a handle on the weeds. Once I got the weeds under control, I found that I only need to spot spray once in the Spring and Fall.
If you disturb the soil, you will get weeds in the disturbed area if you don’t do anything. Instead of letting the weeds get a foot hold, spread and rake-in some native grass seed in the disturbed area. The grass will reduce the number of weeds that show-up. You will need to apply some herbicide the following year to kill all the weeds. Do not apply herbicide when the grass is new and make sure it is a type of herbicide that doesn’t kill grass.
See the Reclamation Grasses page for more information about grasses for our area.
